Ashton Shepherd was born Aug. 16, 1986, and is a native of Leroy, Ala. Her
father worked in a paper mill, and her mother stayed home with their four
children. She started singing country music in local talent shows as a
child, began writing songs and playing guitar as a teenager and recorded an
independent CD to sell at appearances. She won a contest in her home state
to open for Lorrie Morgan in June 2006. By the end of the summer, after
being heard by a record producer, she came to Nashville in an effort to
make connections within the music industry. An unsolicited phone call to a
lawyer's office connected her to famed producer-guitarist Jerry Kennedy,
who introduced her to his son, Shelby Kennedy. With their help, Shepherd
signed to MCA Nashville. Her first album is due in 2008.

HARD AS NAILS PREACHER
Jumping up and down, getting hit by chairs and telling girls they are fat
is hardly the image of a Catholic preacher. But for Justin Fatica, a
29-year-old unordained priest and leader of a nonprofit called Hard as
Nails Ministries, that is exactly the point. Fatica targets teens with his
preaching, and his methods of spreading his brand of the Catholic message
have brought him both admiration and criticism. Fatica said he found Christ
at the age of 17, on a Saturday afternoon when he stepped out of
confession. This moment planted the seeds for what he believes is his
mission to grab the attention of young people and spread the Catholic
faith. While he acknowledges that he is "not the smartest tool in the
shed," he believes that he has been chosen to preach Catholicism to young
people in this way.

STOP LOSS
After serving his tour of duty in Iraq, a young American soldier who is
ordered to return to the front lines as part of the military's
controversial stop-loss opts instead to go AWOL in a thought-provoking
military drama directed by Kimberly Peirce. Sgt. Brandon King (Ryan
Philippe) is a decorated Iraq War veteran who once served his country with
pride. After his tour of duty comes to an end, King returns to his Texas
hometown and attempts to pick up where he once left off with a little help
from his family, as well as long-time best friend and war buddy Steve
Shriver (Channing Tatum). But just as Brandon, Steve, and the rest of their
war buddies begin to setle back into civilian life, Uncle Sam comes calling
on them once again. Suddenly ordered back into active duty, the
disillusioned war veteran begins to question not just his ties to family
and his longtime friendships, but his capacity for love and sense of honor

MAGIC MIRROR
We've all heard the phrase "Mirror Mirror, on the wall," but what if that
mirror could also tell you what you'll look like if you keep up certain
habits? We all have bad habits but some are more aging than others. Now new
technology reflects those back at you, and lets you peek into the future.
Jon Melko has some good habits. "I'm very active. If I'm not working, I'm
usually in the water diving, swimming, or fishing," he said. But he has
some bad habits, too. "Smoking, occasionally drinking. Social drinker, fast
food -- because i'm always on the go." Knowing that those aren't healthy
habits, he wonders what the toll will be on his body a couple years from
now if he keeps it up. Now a special digital device may have his answer
"Rather than simply provide reflection, what it does is make a
transformation on the image and show it back to the person. And, that
transformation is intended to approximate what somebody might look like if
somebody continues to engage in a prolonged set of behaviors," said Andrew
Fano, Accenture Labs. It's called a persuasive mirror. Under development by
Accenture Labs, the hope is people will be able to see how they'll look in
the future, and maybe change behaviors because of it. "A picture is worth a
thousand warnings," Fano said. Here's how it works: you answer a list of
questions about your habits, from exercise to how much TV you watch,
whether you smoke, and what you eat. All that info is input into a special
software program, which then matches it to pictures taken by digital
cameras connected to the mirror. "What we do to make the mirror aspect of
this work is interpolate an intermediate image. And, it's on this
intermediate image that we apply a series of transformations that are
intended to show the effect of certain behaviors," Fano said. But this is
no toy. The lab sees this mirror as a tool for health providers in the
future. Researchers at U.C. San Diego recently put it to the test. They
just completed a study to see how persuasive the mirror might be in the
fight against childhood obesity. "This is a common problem that needs a new
way of thinking about it," said health researcher Jeannie Huang. The mirror
can work on any age group and on various behaviors. The concept can be very
convincing. As for Jon, he says it might work. The results of the study
done at UCSD won't be out until May. Then, they'll take that information
and continue to fine tune the mirror before they are able to take it to the
rest of medical community.

A judge's ruling in the bitter Paul McCartney-Heather Mills divorce case
shed new light Tuesday on a miserable marriage, saying Mills twisted the
truth when convenient and made "exorbitant" financial demands. "To some
extent she is her own worst enemy," wrote Judge Hugh Bennett. "She has an
explosive and volatile character." Mills, who lost part of her leg when
she was hit by a motorcycle, cast McCartney as an abusive, alcoholic
husband who cruelly made fun of her disability. But the judge made clear
the angry assertions rang hollow. In a devastating indictment, Bennett
called Mills' testimony "not just inconsistent and inaccurate, but also
less than candid. Overall she was a less than impressive witness." By
contrast, the judge praised McCartney, 65, for "consistent, accurate and
honest" testimony in the ruling, made public after he rejected Mills'
attempt to block its release. Calling Mills' demand of $250 million from
McCartney "exorbitant" in light of their four-year marriage, the judge said
her claims may have been inflated because of her estranged husband's
stature.

Eight co-workers from Morgantown plan to head back to the office despite
claiming a 276 million-dollar Powerball jackpot. The women all work at the
Monongalia County sheriff's department's tax office. They were introduced
at a news conference today at West Virginia Lottery headquarters in
Charleston. The group opted to take the 139 million-dollar cash payout
option. Each will receive 11.9 million dollars after taxes. Chief Tax
Deputy Linda Fominko says she sensed something on Thursday and told her
co-workers that they needed to buy Powerball tickets that night for
Saturday's drawing. Fominko used the "Easy Pick" option for the winning
numbers, which were sold at a video poker bar in Westover, near Morgantown.

Tim George, aka "Mr. Etch A Sketch" -- a 57-year-old security guard at a Downtown bank and a resident of the Clintonville neighborhood on the North Side. His motto: "Shake my hand, not my work." Not to worry. Each artwork, made by manipulating the buttons on the toy to create a continuous line, is secure: The knobs have been glued in place and the Etch A Sketch container "drained" of excess powder, thus freezing the image. BERLIN HEART
Houston hospital is leading the way to get a new pediatric heart pump approved for use in the US. The device could help keep hearts beating in children who are awaiting a transplant. Doctors at Texas Children's Hospital are leading a clinical trial on a German manufactured pediatric heart pump called the "Berlin heart." It's a device that can save a baby's life. Dr. Charles Fraser, Chief Pediatric Surgery at Texas Children's Hospital, said, "We view this as a giant step forward for children who have & historically not had the option of such a device for supporting failing circulation." The Berlin heart has not yet earned FDA approval. But over the next three years, Texas Children's, along with 10 other hospitals, will collect data on the device and report back to the FDA. What makes this important is the size. In the past there was no heart pump that was small enough for a child under 10. This pump is small enough for a newborn. Derrick Hernandez, 13, owes his life to the Berlin. He got one in August while awaiting a heart transplant. He said, "Like a week before I came to the hospital, I was weak and I couldn't do nothing. And when I got the Berlin, I felt like I could do more." With the Berlin heart, the pumping mechanism sits outside the chest, with only tubes implanted to carry blood into and out of the device. It also comes with a bulky external drive unit. But some experts believe it could become the standard of care for children whose chests are often too small for an implantable device. Dr. Jeff Dreyer, a cardiologist at Texas Children's Hospital, explained, "We're able to, not only get them to transplant, but get them to transplant in a better physiologic state, or stronger than they might otherwise be." Four months after getting his heart pump, Derrick received a human heart transplant. He's gained weight and is returning to a more active life. His mother is grateful. "Everything that it did for him, I'd do it again," said Bonnie Fraga. According to Texas Children's, 77% of patients on the Berlin heart have survived to transplant. Right now, the FDA allows doctors to use the device when there's no other option to save a life.

LEARN AND EARN: DOES IT WORK?
Fulton County school officials will pay students to study after school in a new program designed to improve their classroom performance. The program called "Learn & Earn" is being offered to 40 students from Creekside High and Bear Creek Middle schools in Fairburn. The program will give students $8 an hour to study after school. The privately funded program also will offer cash bonuses to students who improve their in-school performance. School officials say the goal is to determine whether paying students to study will improve their performance. The 15-week trial program will be conducted with students in the eighth and 11th grades. Students were selected by school staff, based on attendance, grades, test scores and free or reduced-lunch status. A community kickoff ceremony is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday in the media center at Creekside High School.

THE END OF AN ERA
After seventeen years on the air, TV talk show personality Montel Williams is calling it quits. He's a man of many talents - he's an actor, producer, motivational speaker, and a counselor in addition to his duties as the host of "The Montel Williams Show." He's also waged a very public battle with multiple sclerosis, as he was diagnosed with MS in 1999. He's used his celebrity to fund scientific research of multiple sclerosis, and he's active in numerous causes including suicide prevention, education abroad for disadvantaged youth, AIDS prevention and breast cancer research. Montel's latest project is a book called "Living Well: 21 Days to transform Your Life, Supercharge Your Health, and Feel Spectacular". He'll join us to talk about the end of his successful talk-show career, his struggles with his illness, and the book.

The two students in Southern California had just been introduced during an experiment to test their “interpersonal chemistry.” The man, a graduate student, dutifully asked the undergraduate woman what her major was. “Spanish and sociology,” she said. “Interesting,” he said. ‘‘I was a sociology major. What are you going to do with that?”
“You are just full of questions.” “It’s true.” “My passion has always been Spanish, the language, the culture. I love traveling and knowing new cultures and places.” Bogart and Bacall it was not. But Gian Gonzaga, a social psychologist, could see possibilities for this couple as he watched their recorded chat on a television screen. They were nodding and smiling in unison, and the woman stroked her hair and briefly licked her lips — positive signs of chemistry that would be duly recorded in this experiment at the new eHarmony Labs here. By comparing these results with the couple’s answers to hundreds of other questions, the researchers hoped to draw closer to a new and extremely lucrative grail — making the right match. Once upon a time, finding a mate was considered too important to be entrusted to people under the influence of raging hormones. Their parents, sometimes assisted by astrologers and matchmakers, supervised courtship until customs changed in the West because of what was called the Romeo and Juliet revolution. Grown-ups, leave the kids alone. But now some social scientists have rediscovered the appeal of adult supervision — provided the adults have doctorates and vast caches of psychometric data. Online matchmaking has become a boom industry as rival scientists test their algorithms for finding love. The leading yenta is eHarmony, which pioneered the don’t-try-this-yourself approach eight years ago by refusing to let its online customers browse for their own dates. It requires them to answer a 258-question personality test and then picks potential partners. The company estimates, based on a national Harris survey it commissioned, that its matchmaking was responsible for about 2 percent of the marriages in America last year, nearly 120 weddings a day. THE NEW FACE OF PREACHING: THE HARD AS NAILS MINISTRY
Jumping up and down, getting hit by chairs and telling girls they are fat is hardly the image of a Catholic preacher. But for Justin Fatica, a 29-year-old unordained priest and leader of a nonprofit called Hard as Nails Ministries, that is exactly the point. Fatica targets teens with his preaching, and his methods of spreading his brand of the Catholic message have brought him both admiration and criticism. Fatica said he found Christ at the age of 17, on a Saturday afternoon when he stepped out of confession. This moment planted the seeds for what he believes is his mission to grab the attention of young people and spread the Catholic faith. While he acknowledges that he is "not the smartest tool in the shed," he believes that he has been chosen to preach Catholicism to young people in this way.

A REAL LIFE SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE: A LITTLE GIRL’S PEN PAL BRINGS LOVE TO HER MOM
It started as a school assignment. Six-year-old Jannah Lynn was supposed to exchange letters with a soldier in Iraq. But her mom didn't want the name of any random soldier. So Carol Medvec went to New Wilmington Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania where she attended services and asked for a soldier's name from their pen pal program. She was given Army Reserve Sgt. Jim Schultz. "Dear Sgt. Schultz. Hi. You are in Iraq. I want to thank you. You are brave," Jannah Lynn wrote in November 2006. "Dear Jannah Lynn, Thank you for writing me. Being a soldier you have to be brave, you have to be strong, there's time you have to leave your family, but there's time you get to come back," he wrote, and included postcards with pictures of Iraq that she could take to class for show and tell. So began a correspondence with Jannah Lynn that would soon grow to include her four siblings and eventually their mother. And suddenly this soldier was not just serving his country. He was saving a family.

LEARN AND EARN: DOES IT WORK?
Fulton County school officials will pay students to study after school in a new program designed to improve their classroom performance. The program called "Learn & Earn" is being offered to 40 students from Creekside High and Bear Creek Middle schools in Fairburn. The program will give students $8 an hour to study after school. The privately funded program also will offer cash bonuses to students who improve their in-school performance. School officials say the goal is to determine whether paying students to study will improve their performance. The 15-week trial program will be conducted with students in the eighth and 11th grades. Students were selected by school staff, based on attendance, grades, test scores and free or reduced-lunch status. A community kickoff ceremony is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday in the media center at Creekside High School.

PANAMA PLANE CRASH SURVIVOR SPEAKS
A 12-year-old girl who was the sole survivor of a plane crash in Panama is "doing quite well" following her return to California, while dealing with the devastating loss of her close friend, her mother said. Francesca Lewis of Santa Barbara has been resting and going on short outings since her return Friday night with her parents, her mother, Valerie Lewis, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. Francesca remembers little about the Dec. 23 crash that killed her friend, Talia Klein, 13; Klein's father, Michael Klein, 37, a prominent businessman from Santa Barbara; and Panamanian pilot Edwin Lasso, 23. Francesca was on vacation with the Kleins when their Cessna 172 went down. Investigators believe the plane hit a tree during bad weather and crashed on the jungle-covered flanks of the Baru volcano, 270 miles west of Panama City. "They were in the clouds and she remembers trees came up suddenly," said Lewis. Over the next two and a-half days Lewis said her daughter drifted in and out of consciousness while trapped in the wreckage. Lewis said the time between when news broke that the plane was missing and when Francesca was found was "every mother's worst nightmare." She said the family "alternated between trying to be as positive as we could" and despair. Miraculously, Francesca suffered no broken bones. She had hypothermia and only minor abrasions and bruises, her mother said. Lewis described a dramatic and terrifying time when rescuers finally reached Francesca. "From the time they found the plane, the rescuers did everything they could to keep her awake. They fed her sugar cane and tried to entertain her," said Lewis. She said driving rain and high winds prevented a second rescue party from reaching them quickly. The rescue involved a harrowing trip down the mountain where the plane wreckage was found. While thrilled their daughter was alive, Lewis said it was a bittersweet ending because of the devastating loss of the Kleins. "It's hard to even put words to it. It's a huge loss and it's going to be a long time of grieving and trying to heal," she said.

MYSTERY ROOM SERIES: THE CORAL CASTLE Sam Champion will be live from Coral Castle in Florida. Behind this nine-ton door lies a mystery… The Coral Castle, an engineering riddle that modern day scholars cannot solve. It was built by eccentric Edward Leedskalnin, who always worked on the castle alone, under the cover of night, to keep secret his methods for moving and sculpting 30-ton pieces of coral rock. His biggest rocks weigh more that any stone in the Pyramid of Giza and stand taller than any monolith at Stonehenge. MYSTERY ROOM SERIES: THE AMBER ROOM
We travel across the globe to uncover some of the world’s mysteries surrounding famous rooms, buildings, sites. Claire Shipman will be live from St Petersburg, Russia with the Mystery of the Amber Room. The original Amber Room in the Catherine Palace near Saint Petersburg was a complete chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors. Due to its singular beauty, it was sometimes dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World". The Amber Room was created from 1701 to 1709 in Prussia and remained at Charlottenburg Palace until 1716 when it was given by Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm I to his then ally, Tsar Peter the Great of the Russian Empire. The Amber Room was looted during World War II by Nazi Germany and brought to Königsberg. Knowledge of its whereabouts was lost in the chaos at the end of the war. Its fate remains a mystery, and the search continues. A reconstructed Amber Room was inaugurated in 2003 in the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

SINS OF A FATHER
The kid hated needles. But it hardly mattered. About once a week he'd roll up his sleeve, expose his shoulder and feel the cold metal plunge into what little muscle he had there. He would scrunch up his face as if he had smelled something foul and often close his eyes until the contents of the syringe emptied into his bloodstream. Then he could return to his PlayStation 2. The injections had started in 2002, when Corey Gahan was one of the top in-line skaters in the world for his age group. At first the shots contained B-12 vitamins; soon he began receiving human growth hormone as well, and later steady doses of steroids in the form of synthetic testosterone. Both his father and his trainer, Corey says, assured him that the shots were for the best. In April '06 the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) recommended a two-year suspension for Corey and he was ordered to forfeit results dating back to May 2004. Corey's reinstatement was contingent on his getting counseling and receiving a medical evaluation. "This case shows the extent to which drugs have infiltrated youth sports," says USADA chief executive officer Travis Tygart. "It's a grave societal problem. In my view it's just as pernicious as crack cocaine and meth abuse, though some people might think it's more acceptable. It was hard to punish this kid. Yes, he cheated and unfairly beat other competitors, but he was under his father's influence. The kid was a victim." When authorities confronted Miller and Pavicic the two men fingered Jim Gahan. At first Corey refused to implicate his father, but by December 2006, after being banned from competition and with the evidence mounting against Jim, Corey decided to cooperate with the investigators. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Porcelli, the lead prosecutor in the case, Corey's cooperation was a key element in forcing his father's guilty plea. On Jan. 7 Jim was sentenced for providing steroids to his son. With a a jailhouse interview with Jim Gahan, and a live studio interview with Corey.

Although the rest of Olivia's home shows her style, she got bogged down in the bedroom. "This is my bedroom," said Olivia. "It's very plain and simple. Everything came from my parents' house, and I really haven't done anything to it." But that was about to change. Olivia, a schoolteacher on a tight budget, spotted a Web site, Designer at Home. Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The fifth film installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, won't disappoint fans with its usual fast-paced story, great special effects, and—for teenage fans—its great-looking cast. Even with the much talked-about kiss between Harry and Cho Chang has got girls wringing their hankies in envy and despair, it promises to be enjoyable film all througout its two hour and 18 minutes running time (the shortest one in the series so far).
As opposed to the previous HP movies, this one requires a background of the story since it takes off from the point where Harry has announced that Voldemort has returned while the Ministry of Magic proves unwilling to listen to his warnings. Those unfamiliar with Harry and his world (yes, people who don't know Harry Potter do exist) might have some trouble catching up to the events being referenced in the movie.

It might come as a surprise to find a different photo on the editor’s page…No need to fret, you’re still looking at the same CHALK that you have grown to love throughout the years.

My good friend Vicky Montenegro is moving on, and it is with a hint of sadness to bid farewell, but at the same time, I respect her decision and was happy to hear about her next endeavor.

It was stressful and at the same time exciting for the past month. There have been some changes over the summer, as you might have probably noticed as you’ve picked up Chalk. Art director Teej Nepomuceno have helped tweak the look, with some palpable and some subtle changes from the cover to the inside pages.

The fashion team is now composed of fashion editor Kat Cruz and associate fashion editor Bianca Santiago. Kat was from defunct Philippine Inquirer’s Just Shop and have been in the fashion industry for five years now, while
Bianca came from Chalk’s sister shopping magazine Pink. With their help and expertise, we’ve come up with new fashion pages. We incorporated a lot of how-to’s to help you invest on style you feel comfortable in, and of course, provide you with the latest trends and fab fashion places.

We’ve also tweaked the features page for better readability and come up with stories on inspiring young achievers. Chalk has a new associate editor, Nana Caragay, former lifestyle editor. And a new editorial assistant Rona Capili, she is the friendly voice on the end of the line when you phone for inquiries and requests.
Former associate editor Jocelle Evangelista has moved on to help her family business. But don’t lament she will still be contributing for Chalk.

It is my honor to proudly show you the new Chalk. Cheesy as it might sound but it is sent with passion and hard work. May you lose yourself in our pages!

Movie Premiere: 300

Frank Miller's epic graphic novel comes to life in Philippine theaters today. 300 is the story of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. The Spartans were born and bred warriors who took pride in being free men. Their courage and strength are put to the ultimate test when they must face an army of millions.

Review:
The battle scenes are nothing short of spectacular and the plot is so tightly woven that there is never a dull moment. The sepia and earth tones used predominantly in the film contribute to the grittiness of the movie, making one think of the graphic novel on which it is based. A word of warning though: the movie is violent and contains some brief nudity. Definitely not a movie for kids.

Movie Premiere: Innocent Voices

In El Salvador in the 1980s, the government's armed forces are already recruiting twelve year olds, rousting them out of their classes at the local middle school. If he is lucky, Chava (Carlos Padilla) has just one year of innocence left, one year before he, too, will be conscripted to fight the government's battle against the peasant rebels of the FMLN. Chava's life becomes a game of survival, not only from the bullets of the escalating war, but also from the dispiriting effects of daily violence. As he hustles to find work to help his single mother pay the bills, and experiences the pangs of first love for a beautiful classmate, Chava's tiny home village becomes both playground and battlefield.
Armed only with the love of his mother (Leonor Varela) and a small radio that broadcasts a forbidden anthem of love and peace, and faced with the impossible choice of joining either the army or the rebels, Chava finds the courage to keep his heart open, and his spirit alive, in his race against time.

Movie Review: Flags of Our Fathers

It was a photograph that touched a nation in the midst of war. Six men raised the American flag over Iwo Jima, the island fortress of Japan, in the last days of World War II. The photograph re-kindled the American spirit to fight even as the Allied forces suffered terrible losses. But the real circumstances behind the photo were less inspiring. Three of the six men would be killed in the weeks following Iwo Jima. The other three were reassigned to the war publicity machine in an effort to find funding for the military. Rene Gagnon (played by Jesse Bradford) was happy to be off the front lines and living in comfort. John "Doc" Bradley (Ryan Phillippe) was plagued by the memories of his dead comrades. Ira Hayes (Adam Beach) was a hero of Iwo Jima but he still had to face prejudice for being an American Indian. All three experienced the brutality of war and each had to deal with their own demons.

Flags of Our Fathers is not for the weak of stomach, as scenes can be very graphic. It is a realistic view of the impact of war, frame by bloody frame. It is, however, ultimately about the emotional struggles soldiers had to deal with. Certain sequences are told in flashback juxtaposed with scenes from the "present", which can create some confusion with viewers. Adam Beach has the most demanding role of all. His character descends into depression fueled by generous amounts of alcohol while dealing with his guilt of being away from his brothers in arms. It is a role he performs competently, if not brilliantly.
