Movie Premiere: 300

Frank Miller's epic graphic novel comes to life in Philippine theaters today. 300 is the story of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. The Spartans were born and bred warriors who took pride in being free men. Their courage and strength are put to the ultimate test when they must face an army of millions.

Review:
The battle scenes are nothing short of spectacular and the plot is so tightly woven that there is never a dull moment. The sepia and earth tones used predominantly in the film contribute to the grittiness of the movie, making one think of the graphic novel on which it is based. A word of warning though: the movie is violent and contains some brief nudity. Definitely not a movie for kids.

With this blog site, we can keep you posted on the (usually) crazy things that happen in the magazine—or to be more precise, with the staff! (Let me tell you, the Chalk staff is CRAAAZY; and we’d love the share the craziness with you.)

Movie Premiere: Innocent Voices

In El Salvador in the 1980s, the government's armed forces are already recruiting twelve year olds, rousting them out of their classes at the local middle school. If he is lucky, Chava (Carlos Padilla) has just one year of innocence left, one year before he, too, will be conscripted to fight the government's battle against the peasant rebels of the FMLN. Chava's life becomes a game of survival, not only from the bullets of the escalating war, but also from the dispiriting effects of daily violence. As he hustles to find work to help his single mother pay the bills, and experiences the pangs of first love for a beautiful classmate, Chava's tiny home village becomes both playground and battlefield.
Armed only with the love of his mother (Leonor Varela) and a small radio that broadcasts a forbidden anthem of love and peace, and faced with the impossible choice of joining either the army or the rebels, Chava finds the courage to keep his heart open, and his spirit alive, in his race against time.
